Phuket
I tend to share Paul Theroux's disdain for "consumer travel" at corporate beach resorts and time-share condos, but we had heard that the Big Hotel beaches at Kata were something to behold, and indeed they were: pristine white sand, low off-season crowds, and all at a safe remove from the honky-tonk of Patong Beach (which is more-or-less Thailand's answer to Atlantic City).Shamelessly savoring our fruity cocktails, we tuned out the relentless poolside Europop soundtrack and gave wide berth to the scary Russian men in Speedos. Mostly, we stuck to the beach.
We broke up our stay with a day-long boat trip out to Ko Phi Phi and surrounding islands:
