Scenes from the front
November 1, 2004
When I volunteered to staff the Kerry phone bank this weekend, I had pictured myself crammed into a dank warehouse full of bleary-eyed, overcaffeinated politicos. Instead, I found myself perched in a plastic chair on a roof deck in Noe Valley, with a postcard view of the Bay. As trench warfare goes, not so bad.
My assignment was to call absentee ballot holders in Broward County, Fla, following a tight script that left not much to the imagination. So while I can't claim to have used my rhetorical powers to swing any unswung swing voters, it still felt like a worthwhile use of a Saturday afternoon.
p.s. there's still time to volunteer.
