Deep Blue vs. Garry Kasparov
Real-time Java Chess viewer
The challenge
Use the Web to broadcast live coverage of the historic 1997 man vs. machine chess match.
My role
As the project's executive producer, I led an interdisciplinary team of 20+ designers, developers and chess experts in coordinating live coverage of the event. Drove the design and development of the Web site, and managed the development of an innovative Java-based chess viewer application that tapped into a live feed from the Deep Blue supercomputer, allowing Web users to follow the match in real time.
Bottom line
The "chesscast" attracted more than 17M unique visitors (a lot by 1997 standards), and garnered extensive press coverage. The project won the 1997 Cool Site of the Year award.
